In 2026, Canada's average annual precipitation is estimated at 683.5 millimeters, a level essentially unchanged over the 2021–2026 period as flat compound growth masks sharp year-to-year swings. Volatility has intensified. Precipitation jumped 9.7% in 2023 before dropping 9.6% in 2024, underscoring the influence of short-term climate variability, regional storm tracks and transient atmospheric circulation patterns on national totals. These fluctuations play out differently across Canada's diverse climate zones, with some regions experiencing unusually wet years while others see deficits that offset the national average.

Over the past five years, this choppy pattern slightly contrasts with the longer, forty-year trajectory of rising precipitation, particularly in northern, eastern and parts of southern Canada. Attribution studies link much of the observed national-scale increase in annual precipitation since the late 20th century to anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing, with stronger relative gains in northern Canada where warming is most pronounced. This gradual wetting trend is reshaping water availability, altering river and lake regimes, shifting ecosystem boundaries and affecting planting windows and crop choices in key agricultural regions. At the same time, the combination of higher totals and more intense events is complicating flood risk management, urban drainage design and infrastructure planning across provinces.
